Fresh protests erupted in the Iraqi city of Basra on Monday, a day after seven demonstrators were killed by security forces. The latest protests saw demonstrators block main roads and set up barricades of burning tyres. They said they were expressing their anger at poor state services, especially chronic shortages of clean water and acute power shortages.
Also in Basra, hundreds of university students took to the streets as part of ongoing anti-government demonstrations in Iraq.
They called for the resignation of the government, blaming the political elite for widespread corruption, high unemployment and poor public services.
Basra , which accounts for nearly 85% of Iraq’s crude oil production, has witnessed weeks of protests.
