The City’s outdoor skating rinks are now open

The City’s outdoor skating rinks are now open!

The City’s outdoor skating rinks are now open with the exception of the rink at Castlegreen Community Centre and the rink at John Kusznier Park. Both rinks are expected to be ready next couple days. Residents are encouraged to grab their skates and visit one of the fantastic outdoor rinks that the City has to offer.

The City has the following supervised outdoor rinks and ponds:

North Side

  • North End Community Centre,  two boarded, one pond, 954 Huron Ave, open seven days per week
  • Brent Park, two boarded, 173 Balsam St, building closed/no ice cleaning on Mondays and Tuesdays
  • Waddington Park,  two boarded, one pond, 425 Grenville Ave, building closed/no ice cleaning on Mondays and Tuesday
  • Carrick Park, two boarded, 88 Marlborough Road, open 7 days per week
  • West End Park, two boarded, 120 Clarkson Ave, building closed/no ice cleaning on Wednesdays and Thursdays
  • Oliver Road Community Centre, one boarded, one pond, 563 Oliver Road, building closed/no ice cleaning on Mondays and Tuesdays

South Side

  • Frank Charry Park, one boarded, one pond, 901 Pacific Ave, building closed/no ice cleaning on Wednesdays and Thursdays
  • West Thunder Community Centre, two boarded, one pond, 915 Edward St, open seven days per week
  • Wayland Park, one boarded, one pond, 117 Euclid Ave, building closed/no ice cleaning on Mondays and Tuesdays
  • Tarbutt Park , one boarded, one pond, 1115 Tarbutt St, building closed/no ice cleaning on Wednesdays and Thursdays
  • James St Playfield, two boarded, one pond, 609 James St, open seven days per week
  • South Neebing Community Centre, one boarded, one pond, 1841 Mountain Rd, building closed/no ice cleaning on Mondays and Tuesdays

Supervised rinks have their rink building open and supervisor on-site from 2 – 10 pm, on weekdays and 1 – 9 pm, on weekends, unless otherwise indicated. From Dec. 25 – 26 as well as Jan. 1, the rink buildings will be closed and there will be no supervision. On Dec. 24 and Dec. 31 the rink building will be open and supervised from 8 am – 12 pm. Skating is permitted after these house at the user’s discretion.

  • Volunteer Pool, one boarded, 180 Martha St
  • Third & High Park, one boarded, 545 High St S
  • River Terrace, one boarded, 374 Riviera Dr
  • John Kusznier Park, one boarded, 225 Fitzgerald Street
  • Wilson Park, one boarded, 280 Wilson St
  • North McIntyre Community Centre, one boarded, one pond  2051 Government Rd
  • Castlegreen Community Centre, one boarded, 213 Castlegreen Dr

South Side

  • Stanley Park, one boarded, 3255 Wilroy Ave
  • Parkdale Park, one boarded, Porcupine Blvd east of Caribou Cr
  • Minnesota Park, one boarded, 320 Minnesota St
  • North Neebing Community Centre, one boarded, 2145 Rosslyn Rd
  • West Arthur Community Centre, one boarded, 1941 Arthur St W
  • Vickers Heights Community Centre, one boarded, one pond, 1695 Broadway Ave

The City has the following unsupervised, un-boarded ponds:

North Side

  • Anten Parkette, 190 Anten St
  • Picton Parkette, 240 Picton Ave
  • Woodside Park, Woodside St off of Whalen St (new this year)

South Side

  • Friendship Gardens (west pond), Legion Track Drive
  • Franklin St Park, 215 Franklin St N
  • Holt Parkette, 975 Georgian Bay
  • Green Acres Park, 415 Leland Ave
  • Centennial Village, Confederation Dr north of Arthur St
  • Vale Community Centre, 420 Vale Ave
  • Thornloe Park, Thornloe Dr at Laurentian Dr

Residents are also encouraged to visit the waterfront skating rink at Prince Arthur’s Landing, which is open daily throughout the holidays from 11 am – 9 pm. The only exceptions are Christmas Eve, when the facility closes at 3 pm, and Christmas Day, when the rink is completely closed. For more information, visit: www.thunderbay.ca/rinks
