Everyone knows the story of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, right?

Everyone knows the story of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, right?

In this work of fiction a single Grinch steals a single Christmas. Sadly, in the world of non-fiction there are multiple Grinches trying to steal people’s Christmas.

These Grinches hate Christmas – the whole Christmas season. Oh, please don’t ask why, no one quite knows the reason. It could be, perhaps, that their shoes are too tight. It could be their heads aren’t screwed on just right. But I think that the most likely reason of all … may be that their hearts are two sizes too small.

So what is a holiday-loving Lakeheader to do? You’ve purchased Christmas presents and now the Grinches are targeting you. Don’t be saddened, don’t have a fit … Lock it or Lose it is your best holiday tip. Grinches are opportunistic, a downright lazy bunch. No valuables in sight? A locked door? A Grinch won’t act on a hunch.

OK, OK, OK. I’ll stop right there. This Dr. Seuss thing might not be working. Today is the launch of the annual and seasonal Lock it or Lose it campaign. The Thunder Bay Police Service would like to remind residents that the Grinches who hate Christmas are often creatures of opportunity. Something as simple as remembering to lock your car doors may prevent significant loss. Keeping valuables out of plain sight will also discourage these would be Grinches.

This is as low effort as crime prevention gets. But we are busy this time of the year. We have a lot of errands to run, and a to-do list that makes Santa’s Naughty-Nice list look like a post-it note. Things can get hectic and we can forget the simple things. So remind yourself, over and over again, Lock it or Lose it!

Enjoy your holiday season.
